Obama Is No Country Song

The opinion community has embraced Obama in a brotherly hug, a lover’s arms, a worshipers supplication, an enemy’s arm’s length grip and in a madman’s clutching. The millions of words swirling in a maelstrom, running hot and cold, all true and all false: Obama, champion of the common man. Obama, the elite’s new face. Obama, the hoped for. Obama, the unknown.

Obama Wins. Where from Here? Peaceworks' Perspective

Hello friends,

This week we depart from our usual Updates format. We will be sending an event update with Nook News in a day or two. We do want to remind you that our Annual Dinner is this Saturday, Nov. 15. Details are at http://www.midmopeaceworks.org/events.php#258

This post, however, offers our perspective on the current moment, examining the implications of Obama's election and what it bodes for those of us working for peace, sustainability and social justice. We hope you will take a few minutes to read it through and consider our our perspective. We, of course, invite and welcome your feedback. Note that we have not tried to be comprehensive in addressing the issues that will need to be addressed in the months ahead. Rather, we have attempted to put together a framework for understanding our current situation and used a few examples to illustrate our situation.

Thanks for your interest and your work to move us forward in our shared efforts to promote a peaceful, just and sustainable future.

Your friends at Peaceworks

Good, and Now Back to Work: Avoiding Cynicism and Overconfidence in the Age of Obama

Let me say this, to some of those on the left -- some of my friends and longtime compatriots in the struggle for social justice -- who yet insist that there is no difference between Obama and McCain, between Democrats and Republicans, between Biden and Palin: Screw you.

A Look Under the Hood at the (Potential) Obama Administration

Tuesday’s celebration hangovers have finally started to wear off, and the pieces are beginning to fall into place. Change will be coming to Washington in January, but it is difficult to decipher what form it will take. Early clues, however, suggest that Barack Obama’s administration will prove unlikely to alter the fundamental political machinery that has led us into war and economic turmoil. Below is a brief summary of Obama’s potential choices for a few key roles in his administration.

Military Mobilization? DRAFT? Obama–YES; McCain–Yes; Rep. Rangel (D-NY)–Yes!

The country is now preparing to elect a new President and as all our citizens consider their choices, they are confronted with the numbing denial by both Obama and McCain that the Iraq war is Illegal. “Why are Obama and McCain discussing the terrifying idea of a draft” Americans are asking, when “it is your sworn constitutional duty to call for an end to this and future Illegal Wars,” and then, a draft is clearly un-necessary?

Rep. Rangel (D-NY) has been on record for a draft since November 2006:
“"There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way," Rangel said.” See note 1
Rangel admits to “flimsy evidence” for the Iraq War, yet does not call for its end. Note 1

ROTC Get Out, Stay Out! Obama Wants You to Serve Imperialism

Barack Obama dropped a bomb on his young enthusiasts at Columbia University on September 11. The heavily Democratic crowd booed McCain when he called for the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) to be brought back to campus (it was driven out in 1969 by protests against the Vietnam war). Liberal students expected a different answer from Columbia alum Obama, but the forum was a symphony of agreement as both candidates campaigned for expanding the military and pledged their enthusiastic support to U.S. imperialism. That should have been the tip-off for anyone who hadn't figured it out by then: Obama is no "peace candidate" but like McCain he is a certified imperialist war candidate.

Obama is a Honky, McCain is a Slave, and We’re All Still Oppressed by the Whores of the Lesser Womb

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Obama doesn’t deserve to win unless he steps up to the real change that it is time for, which is the actual future. What was the one thing people actually spoke out for against the Bush regime? The one thing people saw some kind of funky hope in peeking out of their subconsciouses in the murk of the drear-clear sunny morning talk show drives to and from work that is their lives?

STEM CELLS.

Yes, that got people nodding awake, but not yet stirring from slumber. Because in their hearts there was a quiet murmur that said… yummm… possibility.

Of what though?

FBI Wanted Obama Plotters Charged, But A Rove Appointee Said No

We noticed last week that it was awfully peculiar that Colorado’s U.S. Attorney, Troy Eid, had so airily dismissed conspiracy charges against the three white-supremacist tweakers who were caught planning to assassinate Barack Obama at last week’s Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Meanwhile, protesters who were completely gun-free get charged with felony terrorism in Minneapolis.

Now it turns out that those suspicions were fully warranted:

KUSA - 9Wants to Know has learned three
men in Denver planned to assassinate U.S. Senator Barack Obama during
the Democratic National Convention in Denver by sneaking into one of
his events and shooting him with a gun hidden inside of a camera,
according to federal court records.

Obama, The Prince of Bait and Switch

On 12 July, The Times (UK) devoted two pages to Afghanistan. It was mostly a complaint about the heat. The reporter, Magnus Linklater, described in detail his discomfort and how he had needed to be sprayed with iced water. He also described the “high drama” and “meticulously practised routine” of evacuating another overheated journalist. For her US Marine rescuers, wrote Linklater, “saving a life took precedence over [their] security”.
