In a few short weeks, the Missouri Supreme Court could be hearing our appeal
of the state takeover of St. Louis Public Schools. Our attorneys predict the
hearing will happen in late October.
We expect
opponents of public education to intensify their attacks in the
weeks running up to the hearing. As you know, the state department of
education moved to take over St. Louis Public Schools to stop your movement
for more educational opportunities for your children. They ousted your
elected representatives in order to say that ordinary citizens should have
no voice in deciding what education for their children should look like.

The recent education cuts by the state appointed board (SAB) running St.
Louis Public Schools take aim at the most vulnerable children in St. Louis.
They send a clear message that the state board of education believes that
city children do not deserve the same opportunities and the same level of
support as children in suburban St. Louis and elsewhere in Missouri.
Consider the planned staff reductions: Last year there were 30 school
psychologists, according to the psychologists themselves; now the SAB is
going to cut that number to eight. With 30 psychologists, each one served an
average of three schools each. With eight psychologists, they will serve an
average of 11 schools each less than half a day a week per school. Even
without knowing what they do, that would seem to be an unrealistic workload.
When you stop to consider what the psychologists do, however, you can
appreciate that this is an underhanded way to deny children special

(December 4, 2007) The Saint Louis Board of Education will hold a
Regular Board Meeting on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 at Beaumont High School,
located at 3836 Natural Bridge Avenue. The Regular Board Meeting will begin
in open session at 7:00 p.m. in Room 037 and is open to the public. This

Treat Employees with Honesty and Respect, Resolution Urges
The St. Louis Board of Education last night (October 9, 2007) urged the
state appointed board to alter its policy for dealing with employee groups
before it disrupts school. The Board of Education passed a resolution that
urged the state appointed board, "to begin treating employees with honesty
and respect and honor any existing agreements made in good faith between
employee groups and the Board of Education."
The resolution followed presentations and a discussion with rank-and-file
school bus drivers and representatives of Laborers Local 509 about the
reasons for the drivers' two-day strike, and a report by Board of Education
President Peter Downs on the state appointed board's looming conflicts with
other employee groups. Downs is chairman of the elected board's human
resources and professional development committee.
