World Naked Bike Ride Cycles Into Saint Louis This Summer
The first ever Saint Louis World Naked Bike Ride will launch later this summer on Saturday August 2 at 9 pm, departing from Tower Grove Park’s Pool Pavilion (near Magnolia Ave and Tower Grove Ave).
The World Naked Bike Ride is an international event protesting oil dependency, promoting positive body image, and raising cyclist awareness. The bike ride’s dress code is “bare as you dare,” so all participants are welcome whether fully clothed, covered in body paint, or completely bare. It has been successful in various other cities such as nearby Chicago, though this is the first summer it will take place in Saint Louis. The Saint Louis event will have some pre-ride body painting at 7 pm.

Ride of Silence
Please join our region's silent procession of cyclists to honor those who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Part of a worldwide event, the St. Louis Ride of Silence will depart at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, from the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park. Before the ride there will be a brief presentation at 6:45 p.m.

Crashes vs. Congestion: What's the Cost to Society?
The American Automobile Association (AAA) has released a report that examines the costs of roadway crashes to society. According to AAA, the study is designed to raise awareness of the importance of transportation investments, and to provide policy makers, departments of transportation, and the public with information on the magnitude of the safety problem.
From the report summary:
In every city, the crash costs on a per person basis exceed the congestion costs. Overall, crash costs are nearly two and half times those of congestion. For very large urban areas (over 3 million), crash costs are nearly double those of congestion; for large urban areas (1 million to less than 3 million), crash costs are nearly two and a half times more than congestion; for medium-sized urban areas (500,000 to less than 1 million), crash costs are over four times more than congestion; and for small urban areas (less than 500,000), crashes are seven times more costly than congestion.
Figure ES.3 shows the cost of crashes and congestion per vehicle miles of travel.

Missouri Bicyclists,
Some really great things are coming together for Bicycle Day at the Capitol next Tuesday.
The most exciting (for me anyway ;-) is that I just heard from Jeff Chattin, the Trek rep for Missouri, and Trek has sent the bike Levi Leipheimer rode in the Tour of Missouri for display at Bicycle Day.
James Allen of Springfield will be there with a couple of interesting antique bicycles and some other items to display.

The Bicycle Film Festival is making the call for submissions to the 2008 Festival. I hope you've had your helmet cameras running! The deadline is FEBRUARY 19th
The bicycle film festival is a celebration of bicycles through film, art and music.
We would like all sorts of bike film from 2 minutes to infinity, however short films under 10 minutes are easier to program for our popular shorts program. Of course all lengths are accepted and screened.
